Looking to upgrade from my current non-heated winter gloves. I have tried a pair of cheap Sidi Deep gloves. They lasted part of a winter before starting to rip and fall apart. They were very insulated all over, but didn't really work much better than the old Joe-Rocket winter gloves I had. I have also tried adding silk glove liners.
Incidentally, the differences between Level 1 and 2 are significant. For example, Level 1 gloves aren’t tested for cut resistance on the back of the hand, whereas Level 2 gloves must pass this cut resistance test. Also, all gloves (and boots) that achieve the Bennetts Gold Award are CE Level 2:
I'd like to get your thoughts on a combination of heated gloves and jackets, to connect to the bike. I want to buy from a UK retailer - I'm not going to deal with import duties international returns etc. I have ruled out: Warn 'n safe: in the US they sell some motorcycle gloves, but in the UK only glove liners. Macna: there is no controller.
Thus my eventual investment in, e.g., a heated vest. Battery-powered gloves are a nice enough supplement for heated grips (aka palm warmers), esp. if you're riding a bike without hand guards that would deflect bitingly cold air. This is what I wear. They run one size small, in my view, so bear that in mind if choosing these gloves.
With the exact same heated element on my XT1200 vs DR650/ Stock bars vs aftermarket, on the XT my hands feel like they are burning within a few minutes and I have to turn the grips down or off, on the DR the aluminum bars sap the heat and if its cold I can barely feel anything.
Not for heated hand grips, but excellent cold weather gloves, are Rukka Lobster gloves, I have a set of these as well, and use them on my non-heated hand grip bikes. #15 Hipster , Oct 10, 2012
The coldest and longest I've tempted is 15F for about 2 hrs. At highway speeds, forget it. So much heat loss. Lower speeds, I could do maybe 4 hrs at 15 with a heated bib (Aerostich), heated gloves and heated grips. If you're buying heated gear, get good heated gear. I got less expensive battery heated gloves and that was not money well spent.
Heated gloves (and yes they make em protective glove for motorcyclist explicitly...) with a typical PWM (pulse width modulation) controller gives many levels (mine has 9) of heating which are all gladly used, and works with heated socks and insoles too. barely uses 0.7 amps max per hand or sock, it heats within seconds too.
I'm thinking rather than investing in elec grips or gloves you could likely get by with wind/weather protection. Wind blocking hand guards aren't expensive. I've got an old pair of Widder heated gloves but rarely use them. Too bulky. If not much below freezing rain covers worn over winter gloves work well help keeping wind out.
That's an interesting point. I would be curious to know what the difference is (from a technical or structural standpoint) between snowmobile and motorcycle winter gloves. ex. To me...some of the Klim winter motorcycle gloves look pretty much identical to snowmobile gloves. As far as the style goes, that pair you posted is exactly what I'm ...
