   You can kill part of the worm boss/brain boss, break the segment of worm boss or kill the eyes of the brain, I remember they will drop material to craft the pickaxe, (unless they change it in 1.4.3) and you can just quit out or leave the area so the boss won't die. you can use that to mine hellstone, but you will probably still have to kill WoF ...
