Kazimierz Piotr "Peter" Brachacki (1926 in Dębieńsko, Poland - 1980) [1] was a production designer who worked for BBC Television in the 1960s. Although he worked on several programmes, he is best remembered as the first production designer for Doctor Who in 1963, making him responsible for the iconic design of the TARDIS interior.
While a TARDIS is capable of disguising itself, the exterior appearance of the Doctor's TARDIS typically mimics a police box, an obsolete type of telephone kiosk that was once commonly seen on streets in Britain in the 1940s and 50s. Its interior is shown as being much larger than its exterior, commonly described as being "bigger on the inside".
With his scheme in ruins, the Monk decides to leave and returns to his TARDIS. When the Monk looks inside, he realises the Doctor has taken the dimensional control and that the interior of his ship has shrunk beyond use, leaving him stranded in 1066. The Doctor, Vicki, and Steven return to the TARDIS and leave.
The previous TARDIS interior was shown at the beginning of "The Eleventh Hour"; the Time Rotor on the console had to be rebuilt, due to the explosive special effects used in "The End of Time". [81] The sonic screwdriver is destroyed in "The Eleventh Hour" and a new version, with a green light and metal claws, was created. [82]
The interior of the TARDIS that the Doctor and Clara steal to escape the Cloisters is modelled on the original, as seen in An Unearthly Child (1963). [1] This is the first episode since " The End of Time " (2009–10) to feature Rassilon. [ 2 ]
A new TARDIS interior set also debuted in the first special, designed by Phil Sims, who had previously worked on films such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. [75] [76] The interior offers resemblances to the original 60s set, whilst being much larger in scale.
The current Doctor promptly sends the current Rory and the now-current Amy through the inner TARDIS. The Doctor then explains that he will set up a "controlled temporal implosion" in order to "reset the TARDIS", but in order to do so he must know which lever to use on the control panel.
The 2012 Christmas special, "The Snowmen", aired separately from the main series and introduced a new TARDIS interior, title sequence, theme tune, and outfit for the Doctor. Doctor Who ' s seventh series was the show's third and final series to feature Matt Smith , Karen Gillan , and Arthur Darvill .
