The first three sites were listed in 1980, the Archaeological Ruins at Moenjodaro, Buddhist Ruins of Takht-i-Bahi and Neighbouring City Remains at Sahr-i-Bahlol, and Taxila. Two sites were listed in 1981 and the most recent site added to the list was the Rohtas Fort, in 1997. All six sites are cultural. [3]

Until the passing of the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan , some sites were under the federal government while others were in the provincial domain.
Kota Bharu was founded during the late 19th century. Before the establishment, Kota Bharu was home to Kelantan's Royal Palace, then established by Sultan Muhammad II of Kelantan in 1844 as Kelantan's state capital who wanted the new state capital built in his honour. [2] Prior to this, Kota Bharu was known as Kuala Kelantan.

The museum building used to be the official residence of Kelantan Chief Minister Hassan Mohd Salleh. The building also used to house the Kelantan Islamic Council and Malay Costumes from 1917 to 1990. The building was then renovated and turned into museum which was opened on 11 November 1991 by Kelantan Sultan Ismail Petra. [1]
