The coconut rhinoceros beetle or Asiatic rhinoceros beetle was first detected in Hawaii on the golf course at Joint Base Pearl Harbor in December 2013. This large beetle feeds on the growing shoots at the tops of coconut trees damaging the emerging leaves and providing opportunities for infection with plant pathogens.

Oryctes rhinoceros, also known as coconut rhinoceros beetle, Asiatic rhinoceros beetle, and coconut palm rhinoceros beetle, [2] is a large species of beetle (typically 4–5 cm long), belonging to the rhinoceros beetles subfamily Dynastinae. [1] Oryctes rhinoceros attacks coconut palms and other palms such as the economically important oil palm.
A coconut palm was reported to be in an outdoor courtyard in La Quinta, being tall enough to be able to be seen from the street. It was transported from Hawaii. Some short-lived trees were also grown near the Salton Sea. [1] It appears that the slightly inland areas of Southern California may offer more favorable conditions than the coastline.
