Luther Preparatory School is the oldest Lutheran high school in the United States. LPS began its history as the prep department of Northwestern College, a pre-ministerial college established in 1865. The prep department received its own identity in 1974 as Northwestern Preparatory School (NPS).

The WELS maintains four schools of ministerial education: two college preparatory schools, Michigan Lutheran Seminary and Luther Preparatory School; a pre-seminary and teacher training college, Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota; and a seminary for training pastors, Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, located in Mequon, Wisconsin.
It was created in 1979 by the merger of Northwestern Lutheran Academy of Mobridge, South Dakota, and Martin Luther Academy of New Ulm, Minnesota. In 1995, MLPS was moved to the campus of Northwestern Preparatory School in Watertown, Wisconsin. The combined school is now known as Luther Preparatory School. [1] [2]
