Smithfield Plantation, now known as Fredericksburg Country Club, is a historic former plantation house and estate in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, four miles south of the city of Fredericksburg. It has been a private country club since 1925.
The first European claim on the property was a land patent granted to John Catlett in 1666. By 1710, the tract had been subdivided into several small farms, with Maurice Clark in ownership of what would become Ferry Farm. In 1727, the property was sold to William Strother, a lawyer, and a Burgess for the newly formed King George County.
The 899-acre (364 ha) property is located east of US Route 301 near Port Conway. The estate boundaries are essentially the same as those when the plantation was first established in 1790. The main plantation house dates to that time although it has been extended and altered over the intervening centuries.
Lansdowne, also known as Retreat Farm and Backus House, is a historic home located near Fredericksburg, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. The property is very near the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. The original section was built about 1755, and enlarged in the early-19th century and in 1950.
The land on which Fall Hill is located is part of an 8,000 acres (3,200 ha) land patent obtained by Francis Thornton I (1657–1727) around 1720. The present-day town of Fredericksburg, Virginia is located on that original patent.
