Cooke was born in Port Dover, Canada West. In 1898 he married Lilith Castleberry, with whom he had five children. He later read his poems on radio station WWJ in Detroit, Michigan. He died in Cleveland, Ohio. [1] Cooke’s poetry has been set to music by several composers, including Nellie Bangs Skelton and Kate Vanderpoel. [2]
He was the son-in-law of Elva Broker and the late Jack Broker of Port Dover; brother-in-law of Leslie and Lena Broker of Oklahoma City, Phil and Dawn Poitras of Simcoe, Gerald and Dianne Broker of Delhi, Joe and Linda Misener of Port Dover. [5] Gaylord completed high school at the R.S McLaughlin Collegiate and Vocational Institute. [6]
The Port Dover Harbour Museum, housed in an original fisherman's net shanty, commemorates Port Dover's fishing industry. The galleries present exhibits on the days of commercial sail as well as Lake Erie shipwrecks, ship building, Long Point, the War of 1812 and other aspects of lakeside life in this community.
