1915 map of the railroad. The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad (Y&MV) was incorporated in 1882 and was part of the Illinois Central Railroad system (IC). Construction began in Jackson, Mississippi, and continued to Yazoo City, Mississippi. The line was later expanded through the Mississippi Delta and on to Memphis, Tennessee.
The Illinois Southern Railway, a precursor to the Cairo and Vincennes Railroad, was chartered in Illinois on 6 May 1867. It is shown as Illinois Southern RR (and Rwy) on the 1861 and 1870 railroad maps of Illinois.

The IC was one of the oldest Class I railroads in the United States. The company was incorporated by the Illinois General Assembly on January 16, 1836. [4] Within a few months Rep. Zadok Casey (D-Illinois) introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives authorizing a land grant to the company to construct a line from the mouth of the Ohio River to Chicago and on to Galena.
