"Marigolds" is a 1969 short story by Eugenia Collier. The story draws from Collier's early life in rural Maryland during the Great Depression . Its themes include poverty, maturity and the relationship between innocence and compassion. [ 1 ]
Reviewer Susan Avallone wrote that the collection of stories was "intriguing experimental writing" and "a strange and compelling collection of poetry and prose," uncovering "family, friends, ambition, addiction, infidelity, obsession, and life on the road." A theme provided by references to horses appeared to be "part obsession and part allegory."

Poor. Old. Tired. Horse. (POTH) was a British periodical of visual poetry, running for 25 issues from 1962 to 1967. [1] It was published by Wild Hawthorn Press, which was set up a year earlier in 1961 by Ian Hamilton Finlay. [2] Although most associated with the concrete poetry movement, POTH also contained traditional and avant-garde works. [1]

The reference to horses was first in James Carmichael's Proverbs in Scots printed in 1628, which included the lines: "And wishes were horses, pure [poor] men wald ride". [4] The first mention of beggars is in John Ray 's Collection of English Proverbs in 1670, in the form "If wishes would bide, beggars would ride". [ 4 ]
