The first generation of the Chevrolet Silverado is a series of trucks manufactured by General Motors from 1998 until 2007 under the Chevrolet brand and also as the GMC Sierra. Built on the new GMT800 platform, the Silverado/Sierra 1500 and 2500 pickup trucks were first released in August 1998 as 1999 models.
The 6.6 L Duramax turbo-diesel was introduced with the 2500HD and 3500 models that debuted for 2001. The GMT800 1500 Chevrolet Silverado was named the MotorTrend Truck of the Year for 1999, the 2500 HD was awarded Truck of the Year for 2001, and the Chevrolet Avalanche was the Truck of the Year for 2002. Above the 1-ton 30/3500 model ranges, the C-series truck (C=Conventional) served as a basis for medium-duty conventional trucks marketed by both Chevrolet and GMC.
