The university's origin dates back to 1940, with the foundation of the College of Commerce in Bangkok. In 1984, the college was granted full university status under its present name. The university is academically organized into eight schools: business, accountancy, economics, humanities, science, communication arts, engineering, and law.
KMUTNB was jointly founded by the Royal Thai Government and the Federal Republic of Germany as the North Bangkok Technical School in 1959; colloquially known as Thai-German Technical School. In 1964, the school was upgraded to "Thai-German Technical College" before becoming King Mongkut's Institute of Technology North Bangkok Campus in 1971.
