The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) is one of the 192 national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies around the world. It was established by government decree on 8 July 1935 in the aftermath of the second Italian aggression over Ethiopia. ERCS began by providing humanitarian services to wounded soldiers and civilian victims.
Shimelis Adugna (Amharic: ሽመልስ አዱኛ, October 13, 1935–December 25, 2024 [1]) was an Ethiopian diplomat and official who was the former president of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society. [2] He joined primary school in Hararge and attended high school at General Wingate secondary school in Addis Ababa.

Previously he served as Secretary General to the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (1984-1988), Head of Africa Department (1995-2003) and Head of the South East Asia Regional Delegation (2004-2007).

[3] He was the second person to hold the office of president since the founding of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in 1995.
