The following year, the ICRR began moving its railroad shops from Water Valley to Paducah, Kentucky. By the end of 1928, these shops, which had at one time employed over 800 people, were completely closed. [citation needed] In 1931, Water Valley held its first Watermelon Carnival. It was a great success, bringing 20,000 visitors to the city.

It has an average depth of 291 feet (89 m), [ 2 ] a maximum depth of 618 feet (188 m), and a surface area of 66.9 square miles (173 km 2 ).
