The Senate of Virginia was created by the 1776 Constitution of Virginia, and originally consisted of twenty-four members. [1] Along with the House of Delegates, the Senate comprised a new bicameral legislature designed to replace the colonial Virginia House of Burgesses, which formally dissolved on May 6, 1776. [2]
Virginia's 32nd Senate district is one of 40 districts in the Senate of Virginia. The seat has been vacant since January 3rd, 2025, when incumbent Suhas Subramanyam resigned to become the United States Representative from Virginia's 10th congressional district .
The district is located entirely within Virginia's 8th congressional district, and overlaps with the 42nd, 43rd, 44th, 45th, 46th, 48th, and 49th districts of the Virginia House of Delegates. [4] The district lies directly across the river from Maryland and the District of Columbia. [1]
Virginia's 31st Senate district is one of 40 districts in the Senate of Virginia. It has been represented by Democrat Barbara Favola since 2012, succeeding retiring fellow Democrat Mary Margaret Whipple. [3] In the 2023 Virginia Senate election, Russet Perry was elected.
After the 2020 Census and redistricting, it is located in Virginia Beach and represented by Democratic Senator Aaron Rouse. Before redistricting, the area covered by this district was located in central Virginia where it was represented by Republican Mark Peake since he ran to replace fellow Republican Tom Garrett in a 2017 special election.
The district overlaps with Virginia's 3rd, 4th, and 5th congressional districts, and with the 64th, 75th, 76th, 79th, and 80th districts of the Virginia House of Delegates. [4] It borders the state of North Carolina .
