" Wir sagen euch an den lieben Advent" (We announce the dear Advent to you) is an Advent song with German text by Maria Ferschl written in 1954, and a melody by Heinrich Rohr. The song is part of the German Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch, the Catholic Gotteslob and many songbooks. It is suitable for children.
The later hymn "Veni Creator Spiritus" borrows two lines from the hymn (Infirma nostri corporis — Virtute firmans perpeti). "Veni redemptor gentium" was particularly popular in Germany where Martin Luther translated it into German as "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland," which then he, or possibly Johann Walter, set as a chorale, based on the original plainchant. [3]
He was close to an intellectual European Catholic tradition and mainstream Irish Catholic culture. Two of his long poems, Advent (1975) and Death of Hektor (1979), were widely considered to be important works in the canon of Irish poetic modernism. He also ran Advent Books, a small press, during the 1960s and 1970s.
[1] [2] [3] The text was originally written in Latin. It is a metrical paraphrase of the O Antiphons, a series of plainchant antiphons attached to the Magnificat at Vespers over the final days before Christmas. The hymn has its origins over 1,200 years ago in monastic life in the 8th or 9th century.
Christ I is found on folios 8r-14r of the Exeter Book, a collection of Old English poetry today containing 123 folios. The collection also contains a number of other religious and allegorical poems. [3] Some folios have been lost at the start of the poem, meaning that an indeterminate amount of the original composition is missing. [4]
The poem, with eight colored engraved illustrations, was published in New York by William B. Gilley in 1821 as a small paperback book entitled The Children's Friend: A New-Year's Present, to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve. [1] The names of the author and the illustrator are not known. [2]
The O Antiphons (also known as the Great Advent Antiphons or Great Os) are antiphons used at Vespers during the Magnificat on the last seven days of Advent in Western Christian traditions. [1] They likely date to sixth-century Italy, when Boethius refers to the text in The Consolation of Philosophy . [ 2 ]
By far the greatest Christian poetry composed during the Spanish Golden Age was by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, a member of the minor Spanish nobility, who first served as soldier and a knight of the military and religious Order of Santiago and later became a Roman Catholic priest.
