Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry was established in 1863 as Philadelphia Dental College and is the second-oldest continually functioning dental school in the country. Dentistry was located on the third and fourth floors in the north wing. The fourth floor held the main clinic and was two stories high. In 1863, the school experienced a bit of a setback when some of its resources departed to found a competitor, the Philadelphia Dental College (which later merged into Temple University), and the school also moved to Tenth and Arch Streets. In 1878, another disruption occurred when the University of Pennsylvania began its own dental school.
