St. Paul's parish was founded as St. Jude's on October 27, 1834. [1] The church was located on the southwest corner of Main and Monroe Streets. [2] [1] The cornerstone was laid by Bishop Philander Chase in 1849. [1] The parish's name was changed to St. Paul in 1848. The building was finished and dedicated on September 15, 1850. [1]
In 1839, Father Raho, an Italian priest, visited Peoria, remaining long enough to build the old stone church in Kickapoo. In 1843, the Vatican erected the Diocese of Chicago, taking the Illinois parishes from the Dioceses of St. Louis and Vincennes. St. Mary's, the first Catholic church in Peoria proper, was erected by John A. Drew in 1846.

AOL/SI (also known as Academy/Spalding) was merged with Bergan High School to form Peoria Notre Dame High School in 1988, and the campus was closed at the end of the 1988–1989 school year. Father Sweeney School for the Academically Gifted was also housed at the Spalding Institute building until its closure in the early 2000s.
