St. Philomena's Cathedral, [1] [2] officially the Cathedral of St. Joseph and St. Philomena, also known as St. Joseph's Cathedral, [3] [4] [5] is a Catholic church and the cathedral of the Diocese of Mysore, India. Neo Gothic in style, it was constructed in 1936 during the reign of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV.
In 2011 the church was re-opened for a weekly mass, [2] and there was an expression of interest by a religious order, the Institute of Christ the King, to re-open the church fully. [ 3 ] On 15 October 2011 Canon Oliver Meney and another member of the Institute of Christ the King took up residence in the fully renovated presbytery .
For the first 45 years of its existence, St. Philomena's pastor was Francis J. Markee (1855–1943), who served until his death in June 1943. [12] Rev. A. Paul Lambert succeeded him as priest in July 1943. [13] In 1998, the church celebrated its Centenary Jubilee, holding a triathlon extending to the shore of New Jersey. [14]
