St Peter's Hospital is an NHS district general hospital in Chertsey, Surrey, England. It has 400 beds and a wide range of acute care services, including an Accident & Emergency department. It is located between Woking and Chertsey near junction 11 of the M25 motorway and is managed by Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The new facility, which was designed by Sydney Tattle and built by Chapman, Lower and Peptic, [2] was officially opened by Neville Chamberlain MP, Minister for Health, as the Surrey County Sanatorium on 20 July 1928. [2] The hospital joined the National Health Service as the Milford Sanatorium in 1948. [1]
The hospital was built on the site of a Victorian mansion known as Wexham Park and was completed in 1965. [5] [6] The design led to an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects. [5] An expanded recovery centre was opened by Sophie Christiansen in June 2013 [7] and a new accident and emergency department opened on 3 April 2019. [8]
A plan for the Trust to take over Epsom Hospital was abandoned in October 2012 by NHS London board because a financially viable plan for the future of Epsom hospital as part of the merged trust could not be developed. [4] In May 2014 it was reported that the Trust was proposing to merge with Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. [5]
The hospital has its origins in the Reigate Cottage Hospital which was founded by Dr John Walters and opened in Albert Road North, Reigate, in 1866. [3] It moved to Whitepost Hill on the northern edge of Redhill Common as the Reigate and Redhill Hospital in 1871, and became the East Surrey Hospital in 1923. [3]
The hospital has its origins in the Staines Poor Law Union Infirmary which opened in the mid-19th century. [1] [2] It became the Staines Emergency Hospital in September 1939, Staines County Hospital in December 1941 and Ashford County Hospital in June 1945. [3] It joined the National Health Service as Ashford Hospital in 1948. [3]
The foundation stone for the hospital was laid by Charles Richard Sumner, Bishop of Winchester, at a site donated by the Earl of Onslow in Farnham Road in Guildford in 1863. [2] The 60-bed hospital was designed by Edward Ward Lower drawing on the ideas of Florence Nightingale and was opened as the Royal Surrey County Hospital in April 1866. [ 3 ]
