To calculate your character's maximum hitpoints at first level, you need to know two things - your class and your constitution modifier. The actual calculation is under "Class Features" of each class.
From the basic rules:. Each time you gain a level, you gain 1 additional Hit Die. Roll that Hit Die, add your Constitution modifier to the roll, and add the total (minimum of 1) to your hit point maximum.
Because changes to constitution modifier are applied retroactively one formula can calculate your total hitpoints at any level or change in constitution modifier. The calculation is: hd + (lvl - 1) x (hd/2 + 1) + cm x lvl. Example: A level 20 Barbarian, hit dice size 12, constitution modifier +6. Total HP = 12 + (20 - 1) x (12/2 + 1) + 6x20
There are two ways to decide how much HP your monster has: Method 1: The CR Table. You can start with the monster's expected challenge rating and use the Monster Statistics by Challenge Rating table to determine an appropriate number of hit points. The table presents a range of hit points for each challenge rating. (DMG p.276)
And I can tell you that the way it works is that every class offers a “hit die” at each level, for example the barbarian’s d12, and that each time you level up you increase your hp by rolling the hit die and adding your Constitution modifier to it, so a level of barbarian might grant you 1d12+4 hp if you had 18 Constitution. Rolling a 7 ...
Heroes' feast provides between 2 and 20 HP (an average of 11) Aid provides either 35 or 40 HP (depending on your interpretation of whether wish replicates up to 8th level or 9th level effects; see this Q&A) All together, this yields 502-525 for average results on hit dice, and 597-620 for maximum results on hit dice. 1 credit to Medix2 in the ...
This means that it can either have 13 HP, or you can roll 3d8 for its HP, just like any monster or NPC. Note that it is possible for it to have maximum HP of 24, but there is only a 1 in 512 chance of that happening. You should also note that the average of 3d8 is actually 13.5, so rolling is statistically a better choice.
Bonus Answer. The Damage a character has taken remains constant when HP changes due to CON changes. This is why Barbarians sometimes fall over dead when Rage ends - reverting to their normal Constitution reduces their current and maximum HP, but the HP damage remains; thus a Barbarian with 30 HP can suddenly drop to -50 HP and be very, very dead.
Lets say I'm a fighter that just leveled up to level 4, and decide to bring my Constitution up from 16 to 18. How many hit points do I have? Level 1 = 10 (base) + 3 (Con mod) = 13. Level 2 = 10 +...
