Founded in 1818, it is the oldest secondary educational institution in the United States west of the Mississippi River, and one of the largest private high schools in Missouri. It is located in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

The university offers 50 majors, minors, and certificate programs in education, business, and arts & sciences. It is a member-school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
In 1917 an Armory for the Home Guard was created behind the school, which was eventually given to the high school. It was used as a lunchroom and a gymnasium for seniors. Together with Vashon High School, Sumner was one of only two public high schools in St. Louis City for African-American students and was segregated.
