Chuck Hull (Charles W. Hull; born May 12, 1939) is an American inventor who is the co-founder, executive vice president and chief technology officer of 3D Systems. [1] [2] He is one of the inventors of the SLA 3D printer, the first commercial rapid prototyping technology, and the widely used STL file format.
3D printing or additive manufacturing is the construction of a three-dimensional object from a CAD model or a digital 3D model. [1] [2] [3] It can be done in a variety of processes in which material is deposited, joined or solidified under computer control, [4] with the material being added together (such as plastics, liquids or powder grains being fused), typically layer by layer.
Stereolithography or "SLA" printing is an early and widely used 3D printing technology. In the early 1980s, Japanese researcher Hideo Kodama first invented the modern layered approach to stereolithography by using ultraviolet light to cure photosensitive polymers.
Applications of 3D printing. In recent years, 3D printing has developed significantly and can now perform crucial roles in many applications, with the most common applications being manufacturing, medicine, architecture, custom art and design, and can vary from fully functional to purely aesthetic applications. 3D printed chocolate.
The Prusa i3 is a family of fused deposition modeling 3D printers, manufactured by Czech company Prusa Research under the trademarked name Original Prusa i3. Part of the RepRap project, Prusa i3 printers were called the most used 3D printer in the world in 2016. [1] The first Prusa i3 was designed by Josef Průša in 2012, and was released as a ...
The 3Doodler, "3D printing pen", raised $2.3 million on Kickstarter with the pens selling at $99, [93] though the 3D Doodler has been criticized for being more of a crafting pen than a 3D printer. [94] As the costs of 3D printers have come down, they are becoming more appealing financially to use for self-manufacturing of personal products. [95]
Developed by. 3D Systems. Initial release. 1987. Type of format. Stereolithography. STL is a file format native to the stereolithography CAD software created by 3D Systems. [3][4][5] Chuck Hull, the inventor of stereolithography and 3D Systems’ founder, reports that the file extension is an abbreviation for stereolithography. [6] An STL file ...
Thanks to construction company ICON’s massive 3D printer, El Cosmico 2.0 will “showcase entirely new architectural approaches made possible by large-scale 3D-printing,” according to a press ...
