Between Shades of Gray Summary. In June of 1941, fifteen-year-old Lina Vilkas is arrested by the Soviet Secret Police, the NKVD, from her home in Kaunas, Lithuania. She is arrested alongside her mother, Elena, and ten-year-old brother Jonas.
Between Shades of Gray is set during World War II, and concerns the genocide of the Baltic people. In 1940, the USSR (the Soviet Union) annexed the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, and systematically deported citizens deemed “enemies” of the state.
