On 14 May 1524, the royal iron arrived in New Spain, sent by the king of Spain to mark (on the leg, buttock, arm, or face) Indian slaves. It was known as the "ransom iron". Subsequently, the prohibition against enslavement of indigenous people by purchase or inheritance was successfully enforced. It was still permitted in the case of war captives.
