There are clear tradeoffs to running larger/smaller vehicles. Another recommendation to consider is Lexus GX. You can get plenty of older examples for under 30k. Toyota Land Cruisers are similar vehicles. They are tanks. They will legitimately last forever. Resale value is kind of strange (in an expensive way).
I'm eying small SUVs (grocery getter, roadtripper, enough space to throw a few dogs in the back, occasional trips to the hardware store). A lot of the recent small SUVs seem somewhat lackluster, soulless, or utterly boring. Something brand new isn't gonna fly with the wife so I'm looking into something used but under 5 years old or so.
Having owned a 10+ year old luxury brand, just keep in mind that it's no longer luxurious or "prestigious" after about year 3 or so. The only thing about the high end nature of these vehicles that lasts is the high repair bills. If it cost $100k new, even though it depreciated to $30k like a rock, it's still a $100k car when it's in the shop.
If it were me I'd tried to find a certified used luxery suv. You're probably looking closer to 30k but it will be a thousand times nicer riding than in a RAV4. If you can get the powertrain warranty to 100k that gives you peace of mind. Honestly depends on where you're at, RAV4 is an awesome car and super reliable, but it's bland and boring.
When buying in September 2023, I compared the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4…all hybrids. In the end I went with the Rav, in large part due to Toyota’s reputation and personal experience. I know of a Tacoma that went over 400k… it still ran great but the guy wanted something new.
What would be the best option? 2023 Hyundai Tucson SE AWD $28k, 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe AWD $30k, 2023 Mazda CX-5 AWD $28k, 2023 Chevrolet Equinox AWD $29k. Over my budget worth considering, 2023 Toyota RAV4 XLE FWD $32k, 2023 Honda CRV FWD $32k, 2023 Nissan Rogue FWD $32K. Please feel free to suggest any other SUV’s.
