The Texas cichlid (Herichthys cyanoguttatus), also known as the Rio Grande cichlid, is a freshwater fish of the cichlid family, and the only cichlid species that is native to the United States. It is found in the lower Rio Grande drainage in Texas near Brownsville and northeastern Mexico .
These fish are typically 4 to 10 inches (10 to 25 centimetres) long, but can grow to over one foot (30 cm) in length, and reach 2.25 pounds (1.02 kg). [4] The warmouth is occasionally confused with the rock bass ( Ambloplites rupestris ) or green sunfish ( Lepomis cyanellus ), both of which share its relatively large mouth and heavy body.
The sides of its head and chin are commonly a dark shade of blue, hence the name "bluegill". The precise coloration will vary due to the presence of neurally controlled chromatophores under the skin. [4] The fish usually displays 5–9 vertical bars on the sides of its body immediately after being caught as part of its threat display. [5]
