The Walt Disney World Resort (also known as Walt Disney World or Disney World) is an entertainment resort complex located about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Orlando, Florida, United States. Opened on October 1, 1971, the resort is operated by Disney Experiences, a division of The Walt Disney Company.

Origins and Planning. The beginnings of Walt Disney World can be traced back to the earliest years of Disneyland. When that park had first opened in 1955, Walt had bought as much land as he could possibly afford at the time.
At the dedication ceremony, Roy O. Disney announced that the resort would be known as “Walt Disney World” in honor of his brother. Roy wanted Walt’s name to be recognizable as the man who started it all in much the same way that Henry Ford’s name and legacy are synonymous with Ford automobiles.
