In Star Trek Into Darkness, Spock Prime is described as living on 'New Vulcan' while the younger Spock remains aboard the Enterprise, struggling with the loss of his home world, as well as his relationships with Uhura and James T. Kirk. Spock nearly dies protecting a planet from an active volcano, but Kirk breaks the Prime Directive and saves him.
Spock's ongoing conflict between emotion and logic is countered by his parents, Sarek and human Amanda Grayson, a seemingly loving and devoted couple. The character of Sarek and his relationship with Spock and Amanda have been explored in depth in amateur fiction, several authorized novels, and in the animated episode "Yesteryear".
The earliest reference to Vulcan names following a set pattern dates back to a May 3, 1966 memo from TOS producer Robert H. Justman to Gene Roddenberry (later reprinted in the book The Making of Star Trek) in which Justman recommended that all Vulcan names begin with "SP" and end with "K", and have exactly five letters.

In "Catspaw", DeSalle commands the Enterprise while Captain Kirk, Commander Spock and Lieutenant Commander Scott are being held prisoner on the surface of Pyris VII. His most famous role was that of Sarek, father of Spock, in the science fiction Star Trek franchise, both in Star Trek: The Original Series and the animated series, in three films, and in two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
