Sparks was one of the first white settlers in what is now Boaz. In 1886 the community was granted a post office and assumed its current name. Thomas A. Snellgrove married one of Sparks' granddaughters in 1895, and purchased the remnants of the plantation in 1898, one year after the town was incorporated.
Mountainboro was incorporated on October 31, 1963. Additional land was annexed into the town on March 12, 1981, and September 14, 1993. The 1993 annexation included the Skyhaven Estate subdivision.
