It's 55,000 psi, headspaces on the case mouth, and has a rebated rim. At the end of the article, Chuck mentions that there are other similarly designed (older) cartridges but at a much lower psi due to case stretching and that a belt was used for headspace on the "old reliables". It isn't the "World's Fastest Straight Wall Hunting Cartridge."
I'll shoot steel cased ammo in guns design-development-tested with steel case ammo, like my Yugo M70AB2 because that's their natural diet. I look at the extractors of my M1 Carbine and my son's AR M4gery, original actions designed, developed and tested with brass case ammo before general issue, and I feel use of steel case ammo is less than ...
The interchangeable pistol and rifle loads was handy, but the small calibers werent great for larger animals or longer range compared to the heavier calibers often used in single shots and the 76. We often describe it as pistol calibers in rifles, but the 44 WCF(44-40), 38 WCF (38-40) and 32 WCF (32-20) are and were rifle calibers adapted to ...
Back when I first bought my Remington 700 VSF, I didn't have a rifle case to transport it in, and since it was my first "nice" rifle, I wanted a really good case to protect it. I wound up buying an SKB ATA Double Rifle Transport Case. I think I might have paid about $10 less for mine at my local...
I've been loading alot of 223 recently. I was using a plastic dial micrometer (I know, I know) and had to rim maybe 3 out of 10 cases measured on that...
In looking at the history of cartridges, 7.62 NATO was designed to equal the ballistics of the 30-06 military cartridge, but do so in a shorter, lighter case and rifle in order to increase logistical efficiencies. It was found that a shorter case and slightly lighter M80 147 gr. bullet at 2733...
here's my current Savage project - also an "eastern woods" deer rifle. Started life out as a 7.62x39 Model 10 scout rifle, then got a stock upgrade to a walnut model 11 Lightweight hunter stock, and is about to get a 20" 7mm-08 barrel put on it. With the 1.5-4x Leupold scope, it weighs exactly 7 lbs. and points like a dream.
One could go to an intermediate or even standard action, but in the latter (more common) case, you might as well go .280 Remington and get even a wee bit more case capacity (which, presumably is why one was interested in the 284W over the 7mm-08 in the first place).
I wanted to get used to reloading for my new rifle and wasn't concerned much with accuracy. I soon went to Hornady, Nosler and Speer 150-155 gr bullets with pretty good results. My best (or close to it) were loads of IMR 4064 under a Hornady A-Max 155 gr. Unless you get an adjustable gas plug for your Garand, stay away from factory ammo or ...
I have loaded 9mm and 45 acp using 231. I was wanting to start reloading 357 magnum and was wondering which are the best powders to use. I was going to primarily use 158gr bullets - how many grains with what powder work best.
