An organic compound is any of a large class of chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon, with the exception of carbides, carbonates, Cyanides and carbon oxides. Organic compounds are studied in organic chemistry ; many of them, such as proteins , fats , and carbohydrates ( sugars ), are also of prime importance in biochemistry .
One major distinction is between natural and synthetic compounds. Organic compounds can also be classified or subdivided by the presence of heteroatoms, e.g., organometallic compounds, which feature bonds between carbon and a metal, and organophosphorus compounds, which feature bonds between carbon and a phosphorus. Biomolecular chemistry is a major category within organic chemistry which is frequently studied by biochemists. Many complex multi-functional group molecules are important in living organisms. Some are long-chain biopolymers, and these include peptides, DNA, RNA and the polysaccharides such as starches in animals and celluloses in plants.

This is a list of common chemical compounds with chemical formulae and CAS numbers, indexed by formula. This complements alternative listing at list of inorganic compounds . There is no complete list of chemical compounds since by nature the list would be infinite.
Although most compounds are referred to by their IUPAC systematic names (following IUPAC nomenclature), traditional names have also been kept where they are in wide use or of significant historical interests.
