The Sun is a British tabloid newspaper, published by the News Group Newspapers division of News UK, itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Lachlan Murdoch's News Corp. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] It was founded as a broadsheet in 1964 as a successor to the Daily Herald , and became a tabloid in 1969 after it was purchased by its current owner. [ 11 ]
The first issue was titled the Chapel Hill Sun and was sold for $0.25 each. [3] The title was later changed to The Sun. Readership was about 1000 for roughly the first decade [2] and has now increased to more than 70,000. [1] Safransky describes the magazine as one "that honors the mystery at the heart of existence."
Journalist and academic Chris Horrie argued that The Sun gave less attention to the Merseyside teams Everton and Liverpool than other football teams, giving as an example its coverage of the 1986 FA Cup Final between the pair, which it nicknamed "The Giro Cup" (in reference to a slang term for welfare), and its relatively scanty mention of a 9–0 win by Liverpool against Crystal Palace.
