The English Springer Spaniel field-bred dogs tend to have shorter, coarser coats than show-bred dogs. The ears are less pendulous. Field-bred dogs are wiry and have more of a feral look than those bred for showing. The tail of the field-bred dog may be docked a few inches in comparison to the show dog.
The breeders in the 1920s and 1930s developed these dogs into the type of Welsh Springer Spaniel which remains today. [11] The Welsh Springer Spaniel Club (UK) was formed in 1923, registrations slowly increased between the wars but all records held by the breed club were destroyed in an air raid during World War II. [9]
Springer Spaniel refers to two different breeds of dogs, both of which are commonly called simply Springer Spaniel:
Ch. Salilyn's Condor (born October 5, 1987) also known as Robert, was an English Springer Spaniel, best known for being Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in Feb. 1993. He was the first Westminster winner to sire another, when his daughter Ch. Salilyn 'N Erin's Shameless won Best in Show in 2000.
The English Springer Spaniel is the origin of the term "Springer Rage" frequently used in the 1970s and 1980s. English Springer Spaniels were the breed most often referred to dog behavior consultants for aggression in the 1980s. [2] [14] [15]
The English Cocker Spaniel is the most popular dog breed for showing in the UK, Crufts, with seven best-in-show wins since the prize was first awarded in 1928. [20] This was mostly due to the success of dog breeder H.S. Lloyd's Ware Kennel, dogs of which won best-in-show on six occasions between 1930–1950. [21]
