Emerging from the timestream before Savitar, Max Mercury became a mentor to the Flash family's various members and other speedsters, secretly preparing them against the day Savitar would exit the timestream. Savitar manipulates Kid Flash into freeing him from his prison, and convinces Killer Frost to be his personal enforcer. Savitar reveals his true identity to Barry, forcing his original self to confront his own dark impulses and temptations. Savitar's plan of Iris's murder (which would lead to his own creation) is ruined with the sacrifice of H.R.
Joe hides Iris from Savitar on Earth-2 with Harry and Wally but Savitar tricks H. R. into revealing her location by pretending to be Barry, then goes to Earth-2 and kidnaps her. Barry uses the "Speed Force Bazooka" on Savitar, but it fails when Savitar counteracts it with the Philosopher's Stone, which is made out of calcified speed force energy.
While Savitar certainly has directly been charged with using Surya's rays, Savitar has a much more direct congruence with other deities. Although Savitar easily overcomes Superman and Batman, Barry tells Wally to step up, making use of his superior bond to the Speed Force to defeat, depower, and imprison Savitar once again. Fully Redeemed and more powerful than ever, Wally returns to Linda and the kids, enthusiastic to serve as Central City's Flash once again.
