The Federal Republic of Germany, as a federal state, consists of sixteen states. The following is a list of the countries and territories where German is an official language (also known as the Germanosphere). It includes countries that have German as (one of) their nationwide official language (s), as well as dependent territories with German as a co-official language.
The current version of the standard defines codes for all 16 German states, referring to them using the German words Land (singular) and Länder (plural). Each code consists of two parts, separated by a hyphen. The first part is DE, the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code for Germany; the second part is two letters derived from the name of the Land.
