The watershed of the Toa river extends for 1,061 square kilometres (410 sq mi), and has a half slope of 260 metres (850 ft). It takes up about 70% of the Cuchillas del Toa Biosphere Reserve. The area around the river is home to many species of endemic flora and fauna, including at least 1000 species of flowers and 145 species of ferns.

Zaza Reservoir (Spanish: Embalse Zaza, La Presa Zaza) is the largest man-made reservoir in Cuba. It is located in the Sancti Spíritus Province in central Cuba, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south-east of the city of Sancti-Spíritus and 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) north-west of La Sierpe. It has a water mirror area of 113.5 km 2 (43.8 sq mi).
