Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a nerve compression syndrome associated with the collected signs and symptoms of compression of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome usually has no known cause, but there are environmental and medical risk factors associated with the condition. [1] [6] CTS can affect both wrists.
Restricting wrist motion eliminates the repetitive movement and tension overload in the carpal tunnel. This gives the tendon sheaths a chance to heal, reducing swelling, which then may decrease the pressure on the median nerve. [citation needed] Splints also aim to keep the wrist at a certain angle to decrease pressure within the carpal tunnel ...
The development of carpal tunnel syndrome was of particular interest for other idiopathic tardy nerve palsies. Carpal tunnel served as a model for how nerves could be squeezed by narrow anatomic compartments and soon other tunnel syndromes were conceptualized, such as cubital tunnel syndrome, and tarsal tunnel syndrome. [87] [88] [83]
Cubital tunnel syndrome is a condition that induces pains when ulnar nerves are stretched, pressed, and irritated. This syndrome is also known as "ulnar nerve entrapment". Similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome evokes symptoms, including pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand. [10]
Effleurage is part of a type of massage called myofascial relaxation, which is used for carpal tunnel syndrome. [5] In some cases, effleurage can be used to reduce labor pain. [ 6 ] Clinical studies have shown that Swedish massage can reduce chronic pain, fatigue, joint stiffness. [ 7 ]
Reverse Phalen's test. This test is performed by having the patient maintain full wrist and finger extension for two minutes. The reverse Phalen's test significantly increases pressure in the carpal tunnel within 10 seconds of the change in wrist posture and the carpal tunnel pressure has the tendency to increase throughout the test's duration.
Stretching, occupational and physical therapy are common non-invasive approaches used in the treatment of TOS. The goal of stretching is to relieve compression in the thoracic cavity, reduce blood vessel and nerve impingement, and realign the bones, muscles, ligaments, or tendons that are causing the problem. [citation needed]
Isolated situations like pregnancy, thyroid disease or ones occupation (desk work or intense physical labour) can lead to mononeuropathy as a result entrapped nerve sites. [2] Peripheral neuropathy and mononeuropathy can be a result of a variety of factors, but are a result of one of three methods:
