The Reserve was re-established as the Minnesota National Forest on 23 May 1908. [4] In 1928, the forest was renamed in honor of the Chippewa tribe of Native Americans from whose land the forest was created. Subsequent boundary expansions and land purchases increased the area of the forest to its present size.
High Forest was platted in 1855, and named for the forests near the original town site. [3] A post office was established at High Forest in 1856, and remained in operation until 1902. [ 4 ]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 19.6 square miles (50.7 km 2), of which 19.4 square miles (50.3 km 2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.4 km 2) (0.72%) is water. No municipalities are located in Swedes Forest Township.
