Charles de Gontaut was born in 1562, the eldest son of the Catholic Armand de Gontaut, the baron de Biron and Protestant Jeanne, dame d'Ornezan. [1] His father served the king throughout the French Wars of Religion seeing service at the siege of La Rochelle in 1573 and continuing his service through the following decades as a Marshal.

Beginning his service during the Italian Wars , Biron served in Italy under Marshal Brissac and Guise in 1557 before rising to command his own cavalry regiment.
The Château de Gavaudun is a castle in the village of Gavaudun (Lot-et-Garonne, France) on the river Lède, near the Périgord noir region. It was built on a rocky spur and overhangs the river. The lofty 13th century keep rises 25m above the level of the rock. [1] In the vicinity are the Château de Bonaguil and the Château de Biron.
