The Balmoral Hotel is a hotel and landmark in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is located in the heart of the city at the east end of Princes Street, the main shopping street beneath the Edinburgh Castle rock, and the southern edge of the New Town. It is accessed from Princes Street, on its north side, and flanked by North Bridge and Waverley Steps.
A £24 million refurbishment in 2011 put the hotel within the luxury flagship Waldorf Astoria brand, and it was renamed Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian. [2] By the time of the refurbishment, the hotel had 241 rooms. [16] The refurbishment plans included the addition and improvement of the public spaces, rooms, spa and restaurant. [16]
The hotel, next to Edinburgh: New Town Church (formerly St Andrew's and St George's West Church). The five townhouses on George Street that make up the hotel's historic core, Nos. 15–25, [1] were constructed around 1780 as part of Edinburgh's New Town, to designs by John Young. [2]
