A compression fracture is a collapse of a vertebra.It may be due to trauma or due to a weakening of the vertebra (compare with burst fracture).This weakening is seen in patients with osteoporosis or osteogenesis imperfecta, lytic lesions from metastatic or primary tumors, [1] or infection. [2]
The symptoms of a vertebral collapse ("compression fracture") are sudden back pain, often with radicular pain (shooting pain due to nerve root compression) and rarely with spinal cord compression or cauda equina syndrome. Multiple vertebral fractures lead to a stooped posture, loss of height, and chronic pain with resultant reduction in mobility.
Osteoporosis is the weakening of the bones due to progressive decrease in bone density. [13] In older patients, the low bone density of the spine is unable to support the weight of the body. This gives rise to CSM via vertebral compression fractures [14] promoting further compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots.
