Hi, we are plannig to create a stretched cluster with 2 or 4 hyper-converged nodes (microsoft wssd or nutanix with 6 nodes in 2 clusters). So, specially for microsoft architetture, the RDMA ethernet is mandatory or recommend? Because also i need to buy tor switch and this kind of switch with PFC andETS features are really expensive. Another question, i saw documentation about ROCEv2, but i don ...

Not sure if HCI merits the cost with features available with some storage and vCenter plugins. 2 x Dell hosts (7 years in use) cluster. Dell SAN (all HDD, no SSD) 50% in use (5 years in use) iSCSI network 10GB; PC network 1GB. VMware, approx. 35 VMs, 3 to 1 vCPU to cores, about 450GB memory in use out of 768GB total.

apwilliams (outonalimb) June 15, 2018, 11:29am 1. We’re in the process of looking to replace our traditional 3-tier virtual infrastructure with something fresh. We’ve engaged with multiple vendors to discuss the benefits/drawbacks of both HCI and trad 3-tier for a 40 VM, 20-20TB environment but are being advised against HCI, mainly due to cost.

NetApp’s Virtual Storage Console (VSC) for VMware vSphere provides integrated, end-to-end virtual storage management for VMware infrastructure. VSC leverages NetApp technologies to deliver centralised management of NetApp storage operations in both SAN and NAS based VMware virtual server and desktop infrastructures – directly from the ...

As an example, this IT specialist’s company considered HPE, but ultimately chose NetApp HCI. He writes, “Where we lost nearly 75 percent of our infrastructure due to a malicious attack and were able to recover two and a half hours into it due to the integration, it saved us and all of our customers.

  7. Windows iSCSI server for VMFS - are there known issues?

    community.spiceworks.com/t/windows-iscsi-server-for-vmfs-are-there-known...

Being a single controller architecture is obviously not best practice, but it used to be possible to purchase enterprise NetApp storage equipment with single controllers and that was fine as long as the only concern was high availability. I believe Synology has a single storage controller for all but the most high end boxes.

  8. WHY is NetApp considered a NAS and not a SAN?

    community.spiceworks.com/t/why-is-netapp-considered-a-nas-and-not-a-san/268983

Netapp’s can do both. So I would say it is a NAS and a SAN. Hence the company name: NETAPP (Network Appliance), that is my guess anyway. NetApp was the company name long before it did that. No connection. Being able to do both NAS and SAN is called a Unified Storage device. Nearly all NAS are Unified as SAN is so trivial to do.

(I’ll use off the shelve hardware for the storage (synology, qnap, etc) Your input is much appreciated! 7 Spice ups. anon_73072930 October 23, 2015, 4:18pm 2.

  11. How do you access a NetApp Volume / LUN - Spiceworks Community

    community.spiceworks.com/t/how-do-you-access-a-netapp-volume-lun/552458

The NetApp was / is attached to a vCenter Server. It has two LUNs. LUN1 was mapped in vCenter via iSCSI to Net-App-Vol1 and LUN2 to Net-App-Vol2. Both LUNs had VMs. During December, we had little activity as this is a dev system and most were out. The system was not used and the logs show storage 1 went offline.
