Commercial use of the line commenced on 21 April 1992. In the first weeks, over 23 thousand passengers used the new trains - an occupancy rate of 81%. On 20 April 1992, services started between Madrid and Seville. Non-stop travel time between the two cities were 2:45 hrs; with stops at Ciudad Real, Puertollano and Córdoba it was 2:55 hrs.
Córdoba is an important junction in the Spanish rail network, serving three AVE high-speed rail lines, connecting Madrid Atocha with Málaga, Seville and Granada; and conventional Iberian gauge lines hosting various Media and Larga Distancia services. Trains passing through Córdoba also connect to Cádiz, Barcelona Sants and Jaén.

For the part between Madrid and Córdoba the line shares a common section with the Madrid–Seville high-speed rail line inaugurated in 1992. Outside Córdoba a 155 km (96 mi) spur railway branches off towards Málaga (the total distance between Córdoba and Málaga on the line is 170 km (110 mi) [3]).
