The Ruthwell Cross County Buildings, the former headquarters of Dumfriesshire County Council, and since 1975 the headquarters of Dumfries and Galloway Council. Archaeological remains from the neolithic and Bronze Age include stone circles (as in Dunscore and Eskdalemuir ), tumuli and cairns (Closeburn), and sculptured stones (Dornock). [ 1 ]
English: The famous Bewcastle cross, in midday spring sun, showing the south and east faces. The noted architectural and art historian Nikolaus Pevsner wrote..." The Crosses of Bewcastle and Ruthwell ....are the greatest achievement of their date in the whole of Europe..". The cross is dated AD 685 - 730, the later date date now being favoured.

The inscription round the image on the Ruthwell Cross, for which no direct source is known, reads: "IHS XPS iudex aequitatis; bestiae et dracones cognoverunt in deserto salvatorem mundi" – "Jesus Christ: the judge of righteousness: the beasts and dragons recognised in the desert the saviour of the world".
