The airline began operations with a fleet comprising one Bombardier Dash 8 Q200; and twoDornier 228 aircraft, serving only domestic airports within the Maldives. International operations commenced on 26 January 2008, with scheduled flights to Thiruvananthapuram, India. On 25 August 2008, the airline division was rebranded as Maldivian.

The airport opened up direct transportation facilities to two of their flagship resorts located on adjacent islands. The opening of the airport coincided with Villa's entry into the aviation industry, the founding of a new airline Villa Air (operating as Flyme ), to operate from the airport.
Dharavandhoo Airport (IATA: DRV [3], ICAO: VRMD [2]) is a domestic airport located on the island of Dharavandhoo, part of the Baa Atoll in Maldives. It was opened on 17 October 2012 by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan. [4] Flight operations began to the airport on 15th of that month. [5]
