1870s horse barn at Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington, CT [1] Historic Barns of Connecticut is a Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation project dedicated to the documentation and preservation of barns. The program includes a grant program and a database. [2] The project began listing barns in 2004.
The historic district encompasses about 210 acres (85 ha) around the junction of New Preston Road with Gunn Hill Road and Findlay Road. The main focus of the district is a triangular green, with the 1824 Old Stone Church as its main focus. This church has no heat or electricity and is used during the summer and for weddings.
According to Stratford land records, Abraham Nichols purchased several old farms and large parcels of land in 1696. Nichols exchanged his land for 22 acres (0.089 km 2) of Lt. Joseph Judsons old farm which had a barn on it, 54 acres (0.22 km 2) or half the land owned by Jeremiah Judson, and 19 acres (0.077 km 2) of land from Benjamin Curtiss. [14]
The house was built after the 1814 purchase, and is basically Georgian in style, with a gabled roof and five-bay main facade. Also found at the site are foundational remnants of the mill, including portions of the tailraces of both the grist and cotton mills. Arrayed near the stone house are foundational remains of some of the worker housing. [4]
The Whitfield House served primarily as the home for Henry Whitfield, Dorothy Shaeffe Whitfield, and their nine children. [5] The house also served as a place of worship before the first church was built in Guilford, as a meetinghouse for colonial town meetings, as a protective fort for the settlers in case of attack, and as a shelter for travelers between the New Haven and Saybrook colonies. The door is fashioned out of vertically oriented tongue-and-groove boards, and has a normal pedestrian door built into it. The stone ramp is composed of large granite slabs, which also serve as cover for an underground storage space. [2] The barn was built about 1870, during the ownership of the farm by Isaac Farwell.
