Phú Quốc and nearby islands, along with the distant Thổ Chu Islands, are part of Kiên Giang Province as Phú Quốc City, this is Vietnam's first island city. [2] The island has a total area of 589.27 km 2 (227.52 sq mi) and a permanent population of approximately 179,480 people in 2020.
Vượng was born on 5 August 1968 in Hanoi; his paternal family has origins in Hà Tĩnh in north-central Vietnam. [6] His father served in the Vietnamese Army's air defence division, and his mother is a Hai Phonger, who had a tea shop, which left the family with a very meager income. [4]
An Giang first became a province in 1832, having been settled by the Vietnamese migrants moving southwards in search of new land. It is believed that An Giang was once an important center of the 1st millennium Óc Eo culture, presumably owing to its position on the river.
