This article is a list of teams that play in the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada: Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), the National Hockey League (NHL), and the Canadian Football League (CFL).
MLB originated in 1903 with 16 teams, from the signing of the National Agreement between the National League (founded 1876) and the American League (founded 1901). Through a sequence of team expansions, contractions, and relocations, MLB currently consists of 30 teams. The United States is home to 29 teams and one is located in Canada.
The NABBP existed as an amateur league for 12 years. By 1867, more than 400 clubs were members. Most of the strongest clubs remained those based in the Northeastern United States. For professional baseball's founding year, MLB uses the year 1869—when the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, was established. [29]
