For squad locations and units, there are two in da Bronx, (sq41 & sq61) two in Brooklyn (252 & 1), two in Queens (270 & 288) and one in Manhattan (18). Each squad has a 1st due district where they operate as an engine co. and with that comes the usual engine company runs, BS, EMS runs (CFR-D) ect...In addition, the squads are called upon to go ...
Squad Co. 1 is in Brooklyn. It started out in 1977 at a disbanded Engine 269's quarters. Back in the 60's and early 70's, FDNY ran about 9 squads, but they were for the most part manpower squads. They were eventually all disbanded. Squad 1 was the only squad for a while until Engine Co. 41 was made into a squad.

Some companies have added them on. Two rigs (squad 61 and Eng 283) currently have Federal Eq2b sirens installed by the job, the next batch of 15 aerials being built will have them too. The Q2b is a big no no in FDNY, the job does not want them and officers can face charges for allowing them (untested as yet).

Pro's of a rescue pumper is you can have an all in one truck. FDNY calls them squad companies and many departments by me have now gone to this concept. One of the best sites to check is FDNY Squad 18. This can be a huge debate especially during tough economic times.
